I felt the collaboration and disagreement between Freud and
Jung was interesting. It shows how there are many psychological theories/beliefs
but it’s an area of science where there is much still unknown. Jung differed
from Freud in that he believed dreams were a way of expressing our repressed
emotions and desires. Jung also believed that dreams were what helped people
channel creativity and imagination whereas Freud was not so optimistic about
the self-conscious.
Brainbow is a perfect example of the convergence of art and
neuroscience. It maps the patterns and connections of axons and dendrites in
different regions of the brain. It does this by color-coding different neurons
with fluorescent proteins. By allowing the combination of different amounts of
red, green, and blue each neuron has a distinct color which allows it to stand
out from neighboring neurons. What results is a beautiful, colorful design
showing how thought is very intricate and complex. I appreciated this work
because it expresses the beauty and uniqueness of the mind while also being
very valuable for neuroscientists.
Greg Dunn is an artist who uses neuroscience as an inspiration in his artwork. Many of his pictures use the shapes and patterns of neurons as part of the piece. Neurons have a branching structure where the main stem, axon, branches off into smaller dendrites. This gives it a tree-looking structure which emphasizes the countless pathways in the brain attributing to its complexity. I enjoy looking at this art more so than the Brainbow because I feel like the artist was able to be more expressive rather than being tied down by purely scientific images.
